Welcome to my first blog post! The goal here is to give a little insight into what it is we're doing with ShowSlinger and bring attention to things that we can change in our little corner of the global music industry. So what corner is that? ShowSlinger was built to help the artists and venues that need help. The small to medium size venues (10-1,500 capacity) and artists of all levels from touring pros to the college kid just starting to get his first gigs. The big guys don't need help, they already know what they're doing and they've been doing it relatively successfully. We want to help the 3-4 million emerging artists and 350,000+ venues here in the US and Canada (to start).
This blog is meant to start a no-bullshit conversation with you, the real working musicians and booking people in the bars, clubs and restaurants. However, this is not going to be a bitch-fest, the industry has enough of that already! I see so many people glossing over the problems at this level of the game or just bitching constantly.
We have to recognize the problems and fix them.
It doesn't matter if you're a weekend warrior or touring the theaters on your 10th album, we all need help. So many people have quit the scene because they're tired of making a billion calls to bar owners trying to chase them down. We're tired of struggling to get traction in one city just to start over at the bottom in another. We're pissed off at getting double booked or cancelled on at the last minute. It's tiring to play your heart out just to have the venue owner tell you he's not going to pay you because it rained and the draw was weak.
Why do I say, "we"? Because I'm a musician too. Yup, I'm still out there in the bars and clubs doing what we're all doing. As I write this, I'm down in Turks and Caicos at a resort playing 27 gigs this month. I've got an original 4 piece band, Foxtrot November, and a solo and trio cover band. See the video below for an original song. I'm still working on but will be on an upcoming (as yet untitled) record. But I've been a booking guy for bars, clubs and restaurants for years so I've seen both sides of this mess. And after years of touring and booking shows, I said enough is enough. It's time to take action. It's time to stop talking about the problems and do something.
So, I quit a highly lucrative day job and I built ShowSlinger. It's time to stop fucking around. I put my money where my mouth is.
Stay tuned for the next post! I'll tell you a bit about myself just so you know I'm not some wanker who's never gotten shafted by a club owner and then that'll be it. Because it's not about me, it's about all of us making a change for the better. We'll talk about how the ShowSlinger community will help us all do that in the future.
Our vision is to create more than a company. We want to start a movement to clean up this music industry mess, help musicians do what they love better, help venues manage their entertainment easily while avoiding the headaches and give the fans an unmatched experience before, during and after your shows. Oh, and don't forget to sign up for free if you're an artist, venue or fan! See you soon!
